  • The tiger is the largest cat species
  • There were once nine subspecies of tigers: Bengal, Siberian, Indochinese, South Chinese, Sumatran, Malayan, Caspian, Javan and Bali. Of these, the last three are extinct, one is extinct in the wild, and the rest are endangered
  • In the early 1900s, there were around 100,000 tigers throughout their range. Today, an estimated total of around 3,000-4,500 exist in the wild
  • Tigers can reach a length of up to 3.3 metres (11 feet) and weigh as much as 300 kilograms (660 pounds)
  • A group of tigers is known as an ‘ambush’ or ‘streak’
  • Tiger Cubs

  • A tiger's litter will usually range from 3-4 cubs
  • Around half of tiger cubs don’t live beyond two years of age
  • Tiger cubs leave their mother when they are around 2 years of age
  • Population

  • Javan tiger: Extinct
  • Bali tiger: Extinct
